Difficulty Easy
Cost $0.50

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Hydrogen peroxide (3%)
  • 1 tablespoon Dish soap (Dawn works best)
  • 2 tablespoons Baking soda
Safe for: white fabrics, colorfast fabrics, cotton, polyester
Avoid on: non-colorfast fabrics, silk, wool, dark colors without testing

Why This Recipe Works

Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful oxidizer that breaks down organic stains at the molecular level. Dish soap cuts through grease and oil-based stains. Baking soda provides gentle abrasive action and helps lift stains from fabric fibers.

Instructions

  1. Mix ingredients: Combine hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, and baking soda in a bowl. Stir gently - it may fizz.

  2. Apply to stains: Apply directly to stains using a spray bottle or by dabbing with a cloth.

  3. Let it work: Allow to sit for 15-30 minutes. For tough stains, gently work the solution into the fabric.

  4. Wash as usual: Launder in the warmest water safe for the fabric.

Tips & Variations

  • For protein stains (blood, egg): Use cold water only - hot water sets protein stains.
  • Grass stains: Add extra dish soap and scrub gently.
  • Grease stains: Apply dish soap directly first, then follow with the full solution.
  • Old stains: May need multiple treatments. Be patient.

Safety Notes

  • Test for colorfastness: Hydrogen peroxide can bleach fabrics. Always test on a hidden area first.
  • Use fresh peroxide: Old hydrogen peroxide loses its cleaning power.
  • Don’t store long-term: Make fresh batches for best results.
  • Avoid on dark colors: Unless tested, the bleaching effect may lighten darks.

Storage

Best used immediately. If storing, keep in an opaque container away from light for up to 1 week. Peroxide degrades quickly once mixed.
