Scented Room Spray (Not a Cleaner)

Add a light scent to room air after removing the source of an odor. This optional fragrance spray does not clean or disinfect.

Mixing time estimate 3 minutes
Listed yield 9 oz
Method difficulty Easy

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Water (Distilled preferred)
  • 2 tablespoons Vodka or rubbing alcohol (Helps disperse oils)
  • 5 drops Essential oil (Optional; omit around pets, children, or scent-sensitive people)
Listed uses: room air when no people or animals are nearby
Avoid or check first: fabrics or surfaces, use around pets or children, direct inhalation

Why This Recipe Works

This is a fragrance spray, not a cleaning product. Remove trash, damp material, smoke, or another odor source and ventilate the room first. Alcohol can help the small amount of oil spread through the water, but the mixture still separates and must be shaken before use.

Instructions

  1. Address the odor source: Clean up the spill, damp material, trash, or other source before adding fragrance.

  2. Ventilate: Open a window or use an exhaust fan when practical.

  3. Combine liquids: Pour the water and alcohol into a labeled spray bottle.

  4. Choose whether to add fragrance: Skip essential oil if anyone in the household is scent-sensitive or if pets or children may be exposed. If used, add no more than 5 drops.

  5. Shake and spray away from occupants: Shake immediately before use and mist briefly into open room air. Do not spray onto people, animals, fabrics, food, or finished surfaces.

Tips & Variations

  • Prefer source removal: Fragrance can cover an odor but cannot remove contamination or moisture.
  • Use less, not more: Stop if the mist causes coughing, headache, eye irritation, or breathing discomfort.
  • Skip enclosed spaces: Do not mist in a closed car or another poorly ventilated space.

Safety Notes

  • Essential oils and pets: Concentrated essential oils can harm animals. The simplest household rule is to omit them when pets could breathe the mist, contact wet droplets, or lick residue.
  • Keep away from eyes and skin: Spray away from yourself and other people.
  • Do not treat surfaces: Alcohol and oils can stain fabric or damage finishes.
  • Keep out of reach: Store the labeled bottle away from children and animals.

Storage

Make a small batch, label it with the ingredients and mixed date, and keep it out of reach. Discard if its appearance or odor changes. Shake before each use.
