Hydrogen Peroxide Spot Treatment for Compatible Fabric
A fresh, short-contact pre-treatment for white or colorfast washable fabric after a successful hidden-area check. Peroxide can bleach color and is not suitable for every stain or fiber.
Ingredients
- 1 cup Hydrogen peroxide (3%)
- 1 cup Water (For a 1:1 dilution of 3% peroxide)
Why This Recipe Works
Hydrogen peroxide can oxidize some colored soils, but it can also remove dye from fabric. Diluting household 3% peroxide and using a short spot treatment reduces concentration; the garment care label and hidden-area test determine whether to proceed.
Instructions
-
Identify the fabric and stain: Read the garment label. Do not use this method on wool, silk, non-colorfast fabric, or dry-clean-only items.
-
Test first: Mix equal parts 3% peroxide and water, dab a hidden seam, rinse, and let it dry before judging color change.
-
Treat briefly: Dab a small amount onto the stain for no more than 5 minutes. Do not saturate the garment.
-
Rinse and launder: Rinse thoroughly, then wash according to the garment label. Check the stain before machine drying.
Tips & Variations
- Protein stains: Follow stain-specific garment guidance and avoid heat until the mark is gone.
- Grease stains: Use a garment-compatible laundry pre-treatment labeled for grease rather than layering products.
- Old or unknown stains: A professional cleaner may be safer than repeated oxidation.
Safety Notes
- Test for colorfastness: Hydrogen peroxide can bleach fabrics. Always test on a hidden area first.
- Use household 3% peroxide only: Do not substitute a stronger product.
- Don’t store the dilution: Mix only enough for the immediate spot test and treatment.
- Avoid on dark colors: Unless the care label permits peroxide and a hidden-area check shows no change, the bleaching effect may lighten darks.
Storage
Use immediately and discard the remainder. Keep undiluted peroxide in its original labeled container and follow its storage directions.
