Why This Recipe Works

These pods can carry a small amount of soap through a compatible disposal chamber. Garbage disposals use impellers rather than knife-like blades, and a pod cannot sharpen them. Check the appliance and plumbing guidance before adding granular material.

Instructions

1. Mix dry ingredients: Combine baking soda and salt in a bowl.

2. Add soap: Mix in the dish soap.

3. Add water slowly: Add just enough water to make the mixture clump together when pressed, like wet sand. Don’t add too much.

4. Form pods: Press mixture firmly into ice cube trays or silicone molds.

5. Let dry: Allow to dry completely for 24-48 hours.

6. Pop out and store: Remove from molds and store in an airtight container.

7. To use only when permitted: Start cold water, add one pod, and operate the disposal for the time stated in its manual. Continue water for the recommended rinse time.

Tips & Variations

• Start with the splash guard: Odor often comes from removable debris on the guard or drain opening; clean those parts as the manual directs.
• Do not add peels or extra solids: Citrus peel, shells, fibrous food, and other material can obstruct some units or plumbing.
• Persistent odor or poor drainage: Stop using the appliance and investigate the source rather than repeating pods.
