Why This Recipe Works

Instructions

  1. Check the manual: Confirm that heating an open bowl of water for cleaning is permitted.

  2. Prepare the bowl: Pour 1 cup of water into a wide, microwave-safe bowl and place it in the center of the turntable.

  3. Heat in short intervals: Start with 1 minute, then use additional 30-second intervals only until the interior is lightly steamy. Do not continue to a vigorous or prolonged boil.

  4. Let it stand: Keep the door closed for 2 minutes, then open it away from your face.

  5. Remove carefully: Use dry oven mitts and keep the bowl level. Stop if the water appears superheated or begins erupting.

  6. Wipe and dry: Wipe the unplugged appliance as its manual directs, keeping moisture out of vents and openings. Clean the turntable separately only if its care instructions allow it.
