How to Polish Chrome at Home: What Oil and Vinegar Can and Cannot Do
A finish-first method for cleaning and polishing chrome taps, trim, and fixtures, including where the popular olive oil and vinegar mixture is unsuitable and why aluminium is excluded.
The most widely shared “homemade chrome polish” is olive oil mixed with vinegar. The two ingredients do different jobs and, on chrome, they carry different risks. Vinegar is a mild acid used to loosen mineral film; oil is a cosmetic buffing aid that adds shine and nothing else. This guide separates them, states where each is unsuitable, and explains why the same mixture should not be carried over to aluminium.
Four checks before touching a chrome surface
- Read the fixture or appliance care instructions. They take precedence over this guide and over any general DIY recipe. Many tap and appliance makers exclude acidic and abrasive cleaners from their finish warranties.
- Confirm it is actually chrome. Brushed nickel, stainless steel, chrome-look plastic, powder-coated metal, and PVD finishes are all sold alongside chrome and do not share one care method.
- Inspect for wear. Chrome plating is a surface layer, not solid metal. Pitting, flaking, bubbling, or dull patches mean the layer is already breached — stop, and treat it as a damaged finish rather than a cleaning problem.
- Test a hidden area and let it dry. A concealed spot can reveal a change in gloss before a visible one is affected. Drying matters: some changes only appear once the surface is dry.
Why worn chrome and acid are a poor combination
Decorative chrome is a coating system rather than a solid piece of metal. The EPA's electroplating profile describes decorative chromium plating as a thin chromium deposit applied over copper and nickel undercoats on a metal substrate, and contrasts it with hard plating, where a relatively thick chromium layer is deposited directly on the base metal. Household taps, trim, and fittings are the decorative kind.
That structure matters for cleaning. Where the outer chromium layer is intact, it is a relatively hard and corrosion-resistant surface. Where it is worn, chipped, or pitted, an acidic liquid can reach the softer nickel and copper beneath it and the substrate below that. This is the reason to keep any acid contact brief and to stop entirely on a finish that is already breaking down.
This page does not claim that dilute vinegar is approved for your fixture. It claims the opposite by default: unless the maker's instructions permit a mild acidic cleaner, use water, a soft cloth, and a product the maker names.

The two steps, kept separate
The reason to split these is practical, not pedantic. Oil applied to a surface that still carries mineral film simply seals the film in, and a premixed bottle of oil and vinegar separates on the shelf so you never know which one you are applying.
- Clean. Wipe with a microfiber cloth dampened with warm water. Where the maker permits a mild acidic cleaner and a hidden-area test showed no change, a small amount of equal-parts cool water and white vinegar can be used for brief contact on mineral film. Wipe it away with a plain water-dampened cloth rather than leaving it to sit or dry on the surface.
- Dry completely. Most of what reads as “dull chrome” is a water and mineral deposit from air-drying. Drying with a clean cloth does more visible good on chrome than any polish.
- Buff, only if you want shine. If the care instructions allow an oil polish, put a trace of oil on a separate dry cloth — not on the surface — and buff until the metal no longer feels oily. If it feels slick, there is too much on it.
Mix only what you will use now and discard the remainder. Do not store an oil and vinegar premix, and never combine either one with a bleach or drain product. Mixing an acid with chlorine bleach can release chlorine gas.
Why aluminium is excluded, not merely cautioned
“Polish for chrome, metal, and aluminium” is a common phrasing, and it is where the popular recipe stops being appropriate. Aluminium is reactive: prolonged contact with an acid can etch and dull it, which is the opposite of polishing. Grouping aluminium with chrome in one vinegar-based recipe treats two different metals as interchangeable.
If the item is aluminium — window frames, some trim, cookware, some outdoor furniture — use a product labelled for aluminium and follow its directions. This site does not publish a DIY aluminium polish, because a safe one cannot be built from the same two grocery ingredients.
Common problems, without escalating the mixture
Water spots keep returning
This is drying, not cleaning. Dry the fixture after use. Repeating an acid step more often adds risk without addressing the cause.
Surface feels greasy afterwards
Too much oil. Wipe with a little mild dish soap and water if the maker permits it, rinse with a damp cloth, and dry. Use a trace next time.
Cloudy patches that will not wipe off
Stop. Cloudiness that survives cleaning can be plating damage rather than deposit. More acid or abrasion will not reverse it.
Green or white crust at the base of a tap
Often corrosion or mineral buildup at a joint. Do not soak the fitting. Ask the maker, and check for a leak feeding the deposit.
Fine scratches in the shine
Neither oil nor vinegar fills a scratch. Plating cannot be polished back the way solid metal can; treat it as finish damage.
Tempted to use an abrasive pad
An abrasive removes plating. On decorative chrome that is permanent, and it exposes the undercoats described above.
