How to Clean a Microwave - Manual-First Guide

Use short steam intervals and careful wiping to clean a compatible microwave interior, with limits for vinegar, lemon, controls, vents, and removable parts.

Why Clean Your Microwave Regularly

Promptly removing food residue can limit odor, smoke, and baked-on deposits. Cleaning frequency depends on use and the appliance instructions; there is no universal weekly schedule.

The Steam Cleaning Method

If the manual permits it, a modest amount of warm moisture can soften food residue before wiping. Microwave wattage and cavity materials vary, and prolonged boiling can cause boil-over or superheated water.

Instructions

  1. Check the manual - Confirm that heating an open bowl of water for cleaning is permitted.
  2. Use a wide approved bowl - Add 1 cup of water and place it in the center of the turntable.
  3. Heat in short intervals - Start with 1 minute, then add 30-second intervals only until the cavity is lightly steamy. Do not aim for a rolling boil.
  4. Let it stand briefly - Keep the door closed for 2 minutes, then open it away from your face.
  5. Remove carefully - Use dry oven mitts and keep the bowl level. Stop if the water appears unstable or erupts.
  6. Wipe and dry - Unplug if the manual directs it, then keep moisture out of vents, seams, and electrical openings.

Vinegar Steam Method

Vinegar can affect coatings, seals, metal, or nearby stone. Use it only if the microwave manufacturer permits acid cleaning.

Instructions

  1. Read the model care instructions before using vinegar
  2. If permitted, use only the dilution and application method specified
  3. Do not heat acid unless the manual explicitly instructs you to do so
  4. Keep liquid away from vents, seams, door mesh, and controls

Lemon Steam Method

Lemon is also acidic and can leave sugar, oil, or pulp behind. It is optional fragrance, not a necessary cleaning ingredient.

Instructions

  1. Use lemon only if the manufacturer permits it
  2. Do not place rind, seeds, or concentrated juice in the appliance unless directed
  3. Prefer the plain-water steam method above when it is approved

Removing Burnt Smells

Burnt food can leave residue and odor. Remove the source, clean the cavity as the manual directs, and investigate any persistent electrical or smoke smell.

Source-Removal Method

  1. Unplug the appliance if the manual directs it
  2. Remove loose food and wash approved removable parts
  3. Wipe the cavity with the cleaner and moisture level specified by the manufacturer
  4. Dry completely and air the cavity only as directed
  5. Stop using the appliance and seek service if odor, smoke, arcing, or damage persists

Cleaning the Turntable

The turntable and roller ring should be cleaned regularly:

  1. Remove the turntable and roller ring - Most lift out easily
  2. Wash with dish soap - Clean in the sink with warm soapy water
  3. Clean the roller ring - Wipe down the wheels and track under the turntable
  4. Dry completely - Before replacing to prevent water spots

Maintenance Tips

  • Cover food when heating - Use a microwave cover or paper towel to prevent splatters
  • Wipe up spills immediately - Fresh spills are much easier to clean than dried ones
  • Clean when needed - Follow the model's maintenance schedule and address spills promptly
  • Dry as directed - Leave the door ajar only if the manual recommends it and it creates no household hazard
  • Protect controls - Apply the approved cleaner to a cloth and keep moisture out of the panel and vents
